Distance to Roads and Highways

To keep construction costs down, a fuzzy analysis was performed on distance to roads. It is difficult and highly subjective determining how willing individuals are to drive to a ski resort on a regular basis or as an international traveller. Assuming the ski area will likely be away from main highways and roads, I conducted a fuzzy analysis using a J-shaped monotonically decreasing curve with control points c= 100,000 m (100 km) as the maximum limit and d= 50,000 m (50 km) as the minimum limit for suitability ranges in distances from roads.

The roads image was a rasterized already in IDRISI and needed to be reprojected using NAD 1983 UTM10n. They were reclassed and the DISTANCE module was performed followed by the FUZZY module.

This is the macro modeler for roads and highways:

This is the resulting image from the module DISTANCE in IDRISI. (The friction is greater the further away the distance is from the roads.)
